Ways to Support an Employee with Mental Health Concerns

Supporting an employee with mental health concerns involves creating a workplace culture that prioritises openness and understanding. Employers can start by encouraging open conversations about mental health, ensuring employees feel safe to share their experiences without fear of stigma. Encouraging your employee to access mental health resources is essential. MIND, a mental health charity, emphasises that simple changes in attitude, expectations, or communication can significantly impact an employee's wellbeing. By focusing on their abilities rather than limitations, offering timely support, and implementing flexible work arrangements, you can create a more supportive environment.

Here are some practical, cost-effective solutions suggested by MIND:

  • Flexible Work Arrangements
    • Flexible working hours: Allow employees to adjust their start and finish times to accommodate their sleep patterns or other needs.
    • Change of workplace: Consider providing a quieter space for those who need better concentration or placing them near a supportive team member.
  • Time and Support
    • Time off for appointments: Allow employees time off for medical or counselling appointments.
    • Additional training or supervision: Offer extra support to help employees manage their workload.
    • Reallocation of tasks: Temporarily adjust their duties to reduce stress or accommodate their limitations.
    • Buddy system: Implement a formal or informal buddy system to provide support and companionship.
  •  Environmental Factors
    • Light therapy: Consider providing a lightbox or seating near natural daylight for those with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
    • Working from home: Allow employees to work from home if it helps alleviate and reduce anxiety or fatigue related to commuting.
  • Gradual Return
    • Phased return to work: Gradually increase working hours to help employees adjust to their workload.

By implementing these strategies, you can demonstrate your commitment to employee wellbeing and create a more inclusive and supportive workplace.

Managing Absence

Managing absences due to mental health concerns requires a blend of empathy and organisation. At TAC Healthcare, we provide specialist workplace mental wellbeing support to help employees build resilience, manage stress, and overcome challenges.

Start by staying in touch with the employee through their preferred communication method, checking in on their wellbeing without pressuring them to return.

Keep them updated on any major changes at work and involve HR and/or Occupational Health services for expert guidance if needed. When preparing for their return, arrange a return-to-work interview to discuss their progress, assess any needed adjustments, and consider offering lighter duties initially.

Agree on their working hours and communication methods with the team.

Continue to support them with regular follow-up meetings and maintain an open-door policy to encourage ongoing communication. By taking these steps, you can grow a supportive work environment that helps with their recovery and successful reintegration into the workplace.
